The perks of increasing your self-awareness

It feels incredible to be understood. To understand yourself is to expand your options in life that allow you to be your best-self, living your best life.

I love a good personality quiz as much as the next person and I’m all for them as a Life Coach. It’s fun to learn about yourself but it's what you do with the information that counts. It’s one thing to leaving a coaching session with tantalising self-insights or read your personality quiz results and feel warm, cosy and accepted because you feel known and seen for who you are, but it’s another thing to take that information and use it for your benefit and for the benefit of others.

Increasing your self-awareness increases your options.

When you know that your personality style means you’re naturally confident – when someone or something triggers the thought to flash through your mind that you’re arrogant you can let it go because you know about yourself that it’s not arrogance, it’s confidence and that is a natural strength for you. Yes - a strength overused can become a weakness, but this too becomes something you can identify and rectify. For example when your confidence actually IS over exerting itself and shifting into arrogance, you can pull it back because you’re self-aware and can see alternate options.

Being self-aware means you can dismiss unhelpful thoughts that may hold back your potential for no good reason, or you can accept a truth and adapt your behaviour.

Because you know you’re naturally confident you now have options, or perhaps you’re self-aware that you’re not naturally confident and instead of always dumping on yourself, you now have a new option – accept that you need to draw confidence from an intentional place, and that it’s possible. The more self-aware you become, the more you can choose your responses and therefore your behaviours, and if that doesn’t unlock personal power then I don’t know what does!!!

Self awareness allows you to be your best-self.

Best-self. What does that even mean? It means we all have natural elements like strengths, likes, dislikes, passions and interests that come together to make up the amazing and unique person that we are. So your best self comes forth when these elements are all functioning at an optimum level, allowing you to be resourceful, effective and wholly yourself.

Becoming more self-aware of all of these weird and wacky elements that make up ‘you’, is an absolute strength that will benefit you and those around you greatly.

Knowing yourself more intimately actually benefits others too.

When you increase your self-awareness, you learn to better love, respect and empathise with not just yourself - but others as well. Understanding that you’re made up of a multitude of elements, with all sorts of life experiences that colour how you interpret and respond to the world and situations around you, means you can begin to appreciate that others are also made marvellously unique, with their own facets and filters. Once you can appreciate this, then it’s much easier and more natural to cut others some sack.

Ways you can further your self-awareness journey...

There you have it, you've got a place to begin your self-awareness journey and you can hopefully understand why it's such precious knowledge. So, happy self-discovery to you as you go forward from here!!!
